HaBiBis ode to Haris Alexiou

haBiBis, winners of the 1999 ARIA Award for Best World Music Album, are deft at fusing contemporary and traditional Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, Balkan and Asia Minor musical forms. They will team up with Pascal Latras to present songs by the most respected female Greek singer, Haris Alexiou who is considered a major contemporary folk singer in Greece, Israel and throughout the Mediterranean.
The haBiBis will play a selection of demotica and rebetica.The haBiBis play exhilarating music from Greece and the Eastern Mediterranean.
They are back on home turf in Melbourne fresh from the National Folk Music Festival. Their music was also part of the soundtrack for the groundbreaking film by Anna Kokkinos, Head On based on Christos Tsiolkas' book Loaded. Rolling Stone writes; "The haBiBis weave the guitar, oud and bouzouki with consummate ease, in wide chiming choruses and intricate dances over which voices cast seductive spells." The group will be joined by special guest Jenny M. Thomas on violin, who is well regarded for her beautiful playing and work which embraces genres as diverse as Indian ragas and Australian folk songs.
